Corfu Top Ten!

Lists are such personal things and with a limited amount of time we’ll all have our own priorities. So I’m not suggesting here that you cram all these into a two week visit to Corfu!  Indeed we’ve had guests that were not ashamed to say they rarely left Mulberry House during their stay! Mulberry is the perfect place to re-charge your batteries, but if you’re feeling a little adventurous and have got to grips with driving on the island then you might like to consider at least a few of the following:

  1. A lunch in Agni (directly below us, as the crow ‘falls’!). Choose from 3 excellent restaurants, two slightly higher end. For me the first time I had prawn saganaki at Taverna Agni was a life defining moment!
  2. A wander around Unesco-listed old Corfu Town. People-watch from a pavement cafe on the famous Liston and if you’re lucky see a game of cricket! Then cross over to visit the Old Fortress. Have lunch (you see there’s a theme here!) in one of the restaurants on Guildford Street -our favourite just by the French Consulate is Barbat -an authentic Greek estiatorio: I can vouch for the lightly fried sardines served with horta (wild greens).
  3. A visit to the Achilleon palace, home to ‘Sissy’ the Austrian Empress. A lot of guidebooks are very sniffy about the faux architecture, but the location and story more than make up for this. Visit the main room at the top of the house and imagine the guest-list when this was an exclusive casino in the 50’s and 60’s…
  4. It would be perverse not to visit some beaches while staying here! Acres of newsprint have been taken up with what makes a perfect beach, but in our view the little coves dotted along the north east coast are some of the best, Kalami (home of the famous White House of Lawrence Durrell) being our favourite. Further away on the west coast, there is Agios Gordis -a mile long stretch of gorgeous sand and friendly swimming conditions.
  5. A hike (or at least a ramble) around the summit of Mount Pantaktratur
  6. A trip to Old Perithia
  7. Visit Albania!
  8. A walk around our neighbouring villages of Porta, Santa and the once abandoned hamlet of Mengoulas
  9. Experience Holy Week and Easter on the island making sure you are in Corfu Town at least for Easter Saturday morning where you will be moved by the procession involving the the remains of the island’s Patron Saint Spiridon and amazed by the extensive pot throwing all around the Liston!
  10. A day pottering around Mulberry! Make sure you leave enough time to just do nothing!
